Artificial turf is a synthetic lawn: a surface that looks like grass, stays green all year and needs no mowing, watering or fertilizing. Green Scene installs it in Franklin and the towns around it, Brentwood, Spring Hill and Nolensville among them, across whole yards, in the patches where grass won’t take, and as backyard putting greens.
Green Scene lays real sod and overseeds fescue too, so this page isn’t a pitch for one over the other. Turf earns its place on certain ground, and the sections below are about recognizing it.
When does artificial turf make more sense than grass?
When the grass you have keeps losing. Plenty of Williamson County lots were sodded by the builder straight onto graded, compacted clay and construction fill, and Green Scene’s view of that ground is blunt: if the sod makes it through the first year at all, thin growth and bare spots almost always follow. That soil can be fixed, and Green Scene fixes it with core aeration and new sod. Turf is the other answer, for spots where you’d rather stop trying.
Other good candidates:
- Narrow side yards and odd corners where a mower barely fits
- Play space for children and pets
- A backyard putting green, which is turf shaped and finished for golf
- Any yard where you’re finished with watering, mowing and feeding a lawn
What does turf save you over a fescue lawn?
Mostly the routine. Tall fescue here wants roughly an inch to an inch and a quarter of water a week, a mower set at three inches, overseeding in the fall and a feeding schedule. Leave it wet on warm nights and brown patch moves in; that fungus shows up once nights stay above 70° and blades stay damp for ten hours or more. Turf takes the water, the fertilizer, the pesticides and the gas-powered equipment out of the picture.
Then there’s water itself. In August 2024 Metro Water Services asked Nashville customers to run automatic sprinklers just three days a week, overnight, because irrigation was putting heavy demand on the system. A turf yard isn’t part of that problem. Green Scene goes a step further and argues that what you stop spending on lawn upkeep can pay for the installation; how quickly depends on what your lawn costs you now.
How does an artificial turf project go?
The way any Green Scene backyard job does, in four steps:
- Start with a plan, your own or one the design team draws
- Set a budget
- Pick the style and features: a plain lawn, a green with cups, borders of stone or planting beds
- Get a free, no-obligation estimate after an on-site visit
Jose Garcia, the owner, quotes and designs each project himself. When turf covers only part of the yard, the same plan can show the sod, the beds and the irrigation around it, so the whole property is thought through at once.
Is artificial turf hard to keep clean?
Not in this part of the country, where the main nuisance is leaves. When they come down in the fall, you sweep them or blow them off; there’s nothing to rake out of the thatch, because turf has none. The yard stays green through a dry July and a frozen January, children and pets can use it, and nobody plans a weekend around mowing.
If you’re torn, ask Green Scene to price both for the same patch: turf, and fresh sod in tall fescue, 419 Tifway bermuda or zoysia.
