Lawn and landscape care, matched to the season

Fescue wants its seed in fall, bermuda grows all summer, and the leaves and the snow each have their month. The crews work the yard to that calendar.

Lawn and landscape is the oldest part of Green Scene. Jose Garcia started the company in 1995 with a single push mower, so the lawn is where the business has its roots. Today that covers twelve services, from drawing a landscape plan and mowing every week to laying new sod, planting a row of privacy trees and plowing a driveway after an ice storm. The work runs across Williamson County, from Franklin, Brentwood and Nolensville down to Thompson's Station and Spring Hill, and up into Green Hills, Belle Meade, Forest Hills and Nashville.

What does a year of lawn and landscape work look like?

Each season has its own jobs, and the three local grasses don't keep the same calendar.

WhenWhat gets done
Late winterBeds cleaned out and trees and shrubs pruned before the first buds. February and March are UT Extension's second-best window for seeding fescue.
Spring into summerWeekly mowing at each grass's height; aeration for bermuda and zoysia while they grow; seasonal flowers planted and rotated.
August through fallTall fescue aerated and overseeded, starting in August on UT Extension's 2024 lawn calendar; then the leaves, raked and hauled, and the gutters cleared.
Winter stormsDriveways, walks and parking lots plowed, then salted and sanded.

A sprinkler system needs its own two visits, a start-up in spring and a winterization in fall. Those live on the irrigation side of the business.

Where should you start if the lawn is in bad shape?

With a free look at it. Someone walks the yard, names the grass and tells you which of three roads it's on. A lawn that's thin but alive usually needs aeration and seed. One that's uneven, rocky or mostly weeds starts over: a Harley rake clears and levels the ground, and new seed or sod goes onto the clean bed. The lawn care page lays out how those pieces fit into one plan.

I discovered Green Scene after making multiple calls to other companies. Jose showed up on time for our first meeting and was knowledgable, confident and honest.

Lawn & Landscape questions

What lawn and landscape services does Green Scene offer around Franklin?

Twelve: landscape design, landscape maintenance, mowing, lawn care, core aeration and fertilization, overseeding, sod installation, Harley rake prep, spring and fall cleanup, seasonal flowers, privacy tree fencing, and snow and ice removal. Each one is quoted with a free written estimate, and they can be combined on one schedule.

What yard work should be done in the fall in Middle Tennessee?

Fall is when tall fescue is core aerated and overseeded, starting as early as August on UT Extension's 2024 lawn calendar. Later in the season the leaves need raking and hauling and the gutters need clearing, and any sprinkler system should be winterized before temperatures drop below 32°.

What should be done to a yard in late winter before spring arrives?

Clean out the plant beds and prune trees and shrubs before the first buds open, keeping each cut to 15 to 20 percent of the plant at most. Late winter is also the backup window for seeding fescue: UT Extension rates February and March second only to fall.

Can mowing, cleanups and seasonal flowers be handled on one schedule?

Yes. Green Scene's landscape maintenance plans combine scheduled mowing with bed weeding, pruning, seasonal flowers, leaf and debris removal, and snow and ice removal in winter. Teresa Garcia sets the schedule from the office on Mealer Street in Franklin, so one call covers the whole yard.

Does Green Scene take care of lawns and landscaping for businesses?

Yes. Green Scene mows commercial properties, installs sod for builders and commercial accounts, plants seasonal flowers for businesses and plows parking lots for offices in winter. Commercial work gets the same free written estimate as a home, across Williamson County and in Nashville.
