Green Hills landscaping, under Metro Nashville’s rules

Green Hills is part of Metro Nashville, so a sprinkler system here answers to Metro Codes: a backflow preventer, installed by a licensed plumber, inspected when it goes in and every year after.

Green Hills, in Davidson County, north of the Franklin office and across the Williamson County line.

Green Scene began in Williamson County, and over the years the company moved north into Davidson County. Green Hills is one of the neighborhoods they work in now, for sprinkler repair and seasonal service, paver walks and patios, retaining walls and landscape design.

The tools and the crews are the same as in Franklin. What changes is whose rules apply. In Green Hills that's Metro Nashville, for the backflow device on a sprinkler system and for the water it uses.

What does Metro Nashville require of a sprinkler system?

A backflow preventer, inspected twice over. Metro Codes says pools, irrigation and sprinkler systems all require one, with an initial inspection and an annual inspection after that, and that it's installed by a licensed plumber.

That last point is worth raising when you compare bids for a new system in Green Hills. Ask everyone quoting, us included, how the backflow installation will be handled and who does it. Once a system is running, Green Scene looks the device over for leaks at every spring start-up and fall service, whether or not we installed the system.

Does the rule cover a swimming pool too?

It does. Metro's backflow requirement names pools in the same breath as irrigation, so a Green Hills yard with a pool and a sprinkler system should expect both on the inspection list.

The deck around the pool is a separate job, and one we do. An old concrete deck comes out and is replaced with stone pavers in the color you choose, with walls and accent lighting added where you want them. Before pricing it, Jose goes through the budget, any HOA guidelines, the materials and the overall size with you. The pool deck page has photographs of one finished deck.

Can Green Scene build walkways and retaining walls in Green Hills?

Yes: paver walkways, patios, retaining walls, stone masonry, fire pits and outdoor cooking areas. All of it rests on the same rule. Before a single paver is set, the ground is leveled and stabilized with the right base material, and drainage across the lot is checked so water doesn't end up somewhere new once the hardscape is in.

The design side works the same way. You can bring your own plan for Jose to price line by line, or the design team can draw one around how you'll use the space and what you want to spend. More is on the hardscapes and design page.

What should a Green Hills sprinkler owner do before winter?

Have it blown out before the first forecast below 32°. Water left in the lines freezes, expands and cracks pipe and fittings, and turning off the controller doesn't empty them. Our winterization pushes regulated, monitored air through every zone and checks the backflow device, the meter and the shut-off valve on the same visit.

The rest of the year, Metro Water Services has its own request of automatic systems: three nights a week, set by whether your house number is odd or even. The Nashville page has the days and hours.

Green Hills questions

Do sprinkler systems in Green Hills need a backflow preventer?

Yes. Green Hills is in Metro Nashville, and Metro Codes requires a backflow preventer on every irrigation and sprinkler system, and on pools. The device gets an initial inspection and then an annual one. Green Scene also checks it for leaks during each spring start-up and fall winterization visit.

Who is allowed to install a sprinkler backflow preventer in Metro Nashville?

Metro Codes says the backflow preventer is installed by a licensed plumber. When you collect bids for a new sprinkler system in Green Hills or elsewhere in Nashville, ask each contractor how that step will be handled and by whom, and make sure it appears on the written estimate.

Is Green Hills under Metro Nashville’s water and permit rules?

Yes. Green Hills is a neighborhood of Metro Nashville in Davidson County, not a separate city, so Metro Codes' backflow requirements and Metro Water Services' watering requests apply. Belle Meade and Forest Hills, close by, are their own cities with their own ordinances, including permits for removing trees.

Does Green Scene build paver walkways and retaining walls in Green Hills?

Yes, along with patios, stone masonry, fire pits and outdoor cooking areas. Every build starts by leveling and stabilizing the ground with proper base material and checking drainage across the lot. Jose prices it from your plan or from one the design team draws, and the estimate is free and written.
